The WarioWare team took an idea so wacky, it could only be made with the latest technology: the Wii Remote controller! Wario stumbles into an old building called the Temple of Form. Inside, he finds a mystical treasure called the Form Baton. WarioWare Smooth Moves for the Nintendo Wii is the fourth installment of the microgame based franchise. However this is the first WarioWare game to appear on the Nintendo Wii. In this offering from Nintendo, the user uses the Form Baton (a.k.a. Wii-remote) to navigate through over 200 microgames in a frantic fun filled experience.
From the first moment that I started the game the biggest concern that I had was the controls. In a game that relies on fast-reaction and split-second movement, it was paramount that the controls were tight and responsive. My fears were put to rest rather quickly. It didn’t take me long to forget that I was hold a remote and get lost in the various crazy situations that WWSM put me in. Whether I was carving ice sculptures, flying a paper air plane, or shaving a poodle I felt like the game was in tune with my movements. The highlight for me was when I was prompted to hit a soccer ball with my head by jumping and my player jumped when I did.
I have always been impressed with the unique art direction of the WarioWare franchise. Games can range from what looks like a second great art project to scene from Nintendogs. Each game has its own look and feel. This is important in the area of recognition for the user. One overlooked feature in games is navigation throughout the game itself. WWSM does a great job of having a consistent yet simple approach that makes the user feel comfortable despite the fact they are about to dance in a music video. (Trust me that will happen.)
The area that WWSM really shines is fun. This game is flat out fun. The games are well made. The art is unique and silly. This a game that when you see someone else play it, you say to yourself “I have to try that out.” Through personal experience I can honestly say that this game is fun for young and old. This was proven the moment my seven year old nephew played a game with my fifty year old mother and they had a great time.
The bottom line on WarioWare Smooth Moves is this game is a must have for any Wii owner. Now I must get back to sawing logs and doing squats.
